Course Outline

Mental Health First Aid for Adults who Interact with Youth (up to age 24) is a 14-hour course that discusses the following mental disorders:

▪    Substance use disorders

▪    Mood disorders

▪    Anxiety disorders

▪    Psychotic disorders

▪    Eating disorders

▪    Deliberate self injury

Crisis first aid skills for the following situations are instructed:

▪    Substance overdose

▪    Suicidal behaviour

▪    Panic attack

▪    Acute stress reaction

▪    Psychotic episode

DAY 1

Session One: Mental Health and Mental Health Problems

▪    What is Mental Health First Aid?

▪    Common mental health problems

▪    Five basic actions of mental health first aid

▪    Stigma and discrimination?


Session Two: Substance-related Disorders

▪    What is a substance-related disorder?

▪    Signs and symptoms

▪    Risk factors

▪    MHFA for substance-related problems

▪    Crisis first aid for overdose

▪    Treatment and resources

 

Session Three: Mood Disorders

▪    What is a mood disorder?

▪    Types of mood disorders

▪    Signs and symptoms

▪    Risk factors

▪    Substance use and mood disorders

▪    Suicide in Canada

▪    MHFA for mood problems

▪    Crisis first aid for suicidal behaviour


Session Four: Deliberate Self-injury

About the Instructor

Nelson Camp is an accomplished author and speaker who has published many books related to mental health and entrepreneurship. 

He was born in the northern community of Churchill, MB and has lived in several different provinces.  He has travelled the world, earned a master's degree in Education (Counselling Psychology) and was in the formal education system for 20 years.  He worked as a counsellor for 10 years with young people and has a great deal of experience working with needs in mental health.  

Nelson is an engaging motivational speaker who has expertise in the areas of mental health, business, leadership, team-building and wellness.  He uses storytelling from his vast experience, humour, activities and offers practical skills to keep participants engaged and interested when he is presenting.  

Camp has volunteered much of his time to growing the community by coaching young people, sitting on a variety of boards of directors and supporting community events, organizations and his local church. 

Nelson has won many awards, including advisor of the year multiple times for Junior Achievement and was named by the John Maxwell Leadership Foundation as one of North America's 100 most influential people.  

Currently living in Winnipeg, MB, Canada, he is a loving husband to his wife and a proud father of 3 young children.
